Va., gummed top flap unsealed for circular rate and endorsed "OB" for official business, stamp with couple inconsequential toned spots in margins

2550 c Image2c Brown Red (8). Horizontal strip of five with left sheet margin, large margins except where touching two stamps, tied by blue "Columbia S.C. Dec. 31" (1864) circular datestamp on high-quality envelope with embossed floral seal on flap, addressed to Edward M. Lazarus, care of Capt. J. R. Mordecai on James Island S.C., manuscript "31/12 64" docketing, to be strictly accurate we must mention a lightened wax seal stain at the center (a few letters of address strengthened after cleaning) and very faint gum stains along the top edge of strip, its placement near the fold has caused a slight bend in the left stamp

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FEW 2-CENT RED JACK STRIPS OF FIVE CANCELLED IN BLUE ON COVER, SENT TO THE "SIEGE TRAIN" ON JAMES ISLAND IN THE CHARLESTON HARBOR.

The South Carolina "Siege Train" was a special force of C.S.A. artillery that operated from James Island in an attempt to break the Union hold of Charleston Harbor. Captain Mordecai was assistant quartermaster and son-in-law of prominent Charleston resident Moses Mordecai.

For many years this April 23 cover was the earliest known use of the 10c Frameline. The EDU is now April 19. C.S.A. Catalogue value for April 1863 date on cover is $10,500.00
