10c Rose Lithograph Off-Cover (Scott 5)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2383 og Image10c Rose (5). Positions 45-48, horizontal strip of four, unused (no gum), Positions 45-46 showing complete "LITH. OF HOYER & LUDWIG RICHMOND VA." Ty. 1 imprint at bottom, left stamp is also the white arrow variety, huge margins all around, especially at bottom which allows the imprint to be seen without the distraction of a close margin, also large portion of Position 44 at left, vertical creases between stamps, center crease a bit heavy but lies outside the imprint, small thins

VERY FINE APPEARANCE AND AN IMPORTANT CONFEDERATE STATES RARITY. THIS IS ONE OF FIVE OR FEWER RECORDED MULTIPLES OF THE 10-CENT ROSE LITHOGRAPH SHOWING THE COMPLETE IMPRINT -- AND THE LARGEST EXTANT.

There are at least two unused pairs of the 10c Rose showing the imprint. Both have a portion of "Richmond" missing -- one lacks the "M" and "N", while the other lacks most of the lettering after "RI" and is also partially severed and rejoined (ex Walcott, Caspary and Murphy, Siegel Sale 795, lot 745). Our review of old auction catalogues reveals that there may be another pair or another strip of four, but it is not clear if these entries duplicate one of the three examples described here. When the partially severed pair was sold in the Caspary sale it was described as "possibly unique." This strip is the largest imprint multiple we record and is particularly desirable as it shows completely each letter of the entire imprint. The second largest imprint multiple is the strip offered in the following lot.

C.S.A. Catalogue value for imprint pair $8,500.00 (Image)

OF HOYER & LUDWI(G)" portion of Ty. 1 imprint at bottom, imprint stamp is also the white arrow variety, full to huge margins other sides, faults incl. couple filled thins and repaired hole in bottom stamp, Very Fine appearance, a rare unused strip showing most of the imprint, only five or fewer imprint multiples are known, with 1985 P.F. and 1998 C.S.A. certificates, C.S.A. 2389   Image10c Deep Rose, Scratched Stone (5 var). Dark color which in our opinion is Carmine despite most recent certificate, showing clear scratched stone at bottom right, ample to large margins, tied by blue Petersburgh Va. circular datestamp on small piece, bottom left corner of piece reattached not affecting stamp, Very Fine, a rare variety, ex Murphy, with 1982 C.S.A. certificate as Carmine, with 1998 P.F. certificate as Deep Rose (Image)

Aug. 18, 1862" circular datestamp, accompanying certificate mentions small corner crease at top left which we fail to detect, as well as slight toning which is very faint on front but somewhat more evident on back, Very Fine appearance, a lovely stamp, ex Murphy, with 1997 P.F. certificate (Image)
