5c Green Lithograph Off-Cover (Scott 1)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2329 og Image5c Olive Green, Stone A-B (1c). Positions 45-48, bottom sheet margin strip of four with "(H)OYER & LUDWIG, RICHMOND, VA." imprint, missing only the "H" of "Hoyer", original gum, huge top margin incl. large portions of Positions 37-38, full at sides, beautiful rich color and fine impression, creases in all stamps

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A SPECTACULAR IMPRINT STRIP OF THE 5-CENT OLIVE GREEN LITHOGRAPH FROM STONE A-B. THIS IS THE ONLY KNOWN MULTIPLE WITH THE ESSENTIALLY COMPLETE IMPRINT.

Of the 50 subject transfer stones used to create the 5c Green Lithograph (Stones A-B, 1 and 2), only Stone A-B had an imprint, and the imprint only appears on the two bottom transfers on the 200 subject printing stone. The two top transfers on the printing stone had the imprints trimmed off, as they were entered above the bottom transfers with only a narrow gutter between. This is the only recorded imprint strip of four. In addition any unused multiple from Stone A-B is rare -- only two unused blocks are recorded.

Ex Hall. Listed in Scott only as a single. C.S.A. Catalogue value for imprint strip of four $15,000.00 (Image)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE LARGE MULTIPLE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES "NUMBER ONE" FROM STONE 2. THIS BLOCK OF 18 IS THE LARGEST RECORDED MULTIPLE FROM STONE 2.

A Power Search review reveals the rarity of large multiples of the first Confederate States Issue, particularly from Stone 2. The unique full pane of 100, as well as the half-pane of 50, both from the Ackerman sheet of 200 and ex Hall, are from Stone 1. Apart from this block of 18, the largest multiple we have offered from Stone 2 since 1993 and in all our Rarity sales is a block of four. Noted lithograph collector Leonard Hartmann believes that this is the largest known multiple, with the next largest a block of 10. (Image)
