1880-83 American Bank Note Co. Special Printings (Scott 192-211D)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
126 og Image1c Dark Ultramarine, Special Printing (192). Without gum as issued, brilliant color and paper, beautiful centering with wide and balanced margins, small corner crease at top left

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. ONLY 25 ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS. ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL CLASSIC UNITED STATES STAMPS.

Our comprehensive census of Scott 192, available at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/192/192.pdf , contains a total of 25 copies. Only nine are confirmed as sound, and several are off center. The stamp offered here, with far superior centering to almost any other and with only a trivial corner crease, is highly desirable.

EXTREMELY FINE. A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. SCARCE WITH SUCH WIDE MARGINS.

Our recently updated census records for Scott 193 contain 47 certified examples, of which almost half half faults (mostly thins). Of the sound examples, nearly all are centered to top or one side. The example offered here, with well-proportioned margins, should be considered desirable.

Unpublished Census No. 193-UNC-32. Ex Crocker. With 1971 and 2004 P.F. and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85, SMQ $34,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded -- seven have been graded (Image)

128 og Image6c Dull Rose, Special Printing (195). Without gum as issued, brilliant color and paper, choice centering and with long and full perforations all around

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 6-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. ONLY 26 ARE CONTAINED IN OUR CENSUS.

Our recently updated census records contain 26 certified examples of Scott 195, an oddly low number. Some of the stamps submitted as the Special Printing, but certified as the regular issue, Scott 186, could in fact be Special Printing stamps (the two are difficult to tell apart). We record another three stamps which we feel are possibly Scott 195, despite previous P.F. certification. A majority are sound or potentially sound, but many are off center to some degree. The example offered here has better centering than most.

129 og Image7c Scarlet Vermilion, Special Printing (196). Without gum as issued, radiant color, unusually wide margins

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE 1880 7-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING.

Our recently updated census records for Scott 196 contain approximately 80 certified examples. It is the most common of the soft-paper Special Printings because the 7c was no longer in production in 1880 and, probably to some degree, because it can be easily identified since there is no regular issue on soft paper.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 10-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE. ONLY 32 ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.

Our recently updated census records for Scott 197 contain 32 certified examples. Of these, nine have faults, leaving only 23 sound or potentially sound examples (seven have not been examined in many years). Very few are as well-centered as the one offered here.

131 og Image12c Blackish Purple, Special Printing (198). Without gum as issued, intense shade and impression on bright paper, Jumbo margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS PROBABLY THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE 1880 12-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING IN EXISTENCE. A PHENOMENAL STAMP IN EVERY RESPECT.

Our recently updated census records for Scott 198 contain 62 certified examples. Of these, fully one-third have small flaws (mostly thin spots). Only thirteen are confirmed as sound, and of these only seven have decent centering. A significant portion of the population -- 28 -- have not been examined in many years so their condition is not confirmed. Very few of these have decent centering, so the population of sound and centered examples is very small.

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS PROBABLY THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING CONTAINED IN OUR RECORDS. A PHENOMENAL STAMP IN EVERY RESPECT.

Our recent review of the records of the Philatelic Foundation found only 37 certified examples of Scott 199. Of these, only eleven and confirmed as sound and many of these are off center. Perhaps four or five of these have decent centering. Ten have faults, and sixteen need to be reexamined for condition (many of which are off center).

EXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE 1880 24-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. THIS IS THE FINEST EXAMPLE CONTAINED IN OUR RECORDS.

Our recent review of records at the Philatelic Foundation found 66 certified copies of Scott 200, 24 of which have faults (usually a thin spot). Fully 22 are confirmed as sound, but of these only five have decent centering. Of the 20 potentially sound copies, very few have decent centering.

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE 1880 30-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING IN EXISTENCE.

Our recent review of records at the Philatelic Foundation found 44 examples certified as genuine, 16 of which have faults (usually a thin spot). Only ten are confirmed as sound, and only seven of these have decent centering. Another 18 need to be reexamined for condition, but only a handful of these have nice centering.

135 og Image90c Dull Carmine, Special Printing (202). Without gum as issued, radiant color, choice centering for this difficult issue

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A STUNNING EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING IN THE FINEST CONDITION ATTAINABLE. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT ISSUE TO OBTAIN IN SOUND AND CENTERED CONDITION.

Our recently updated census records for Scott 202 contain approximately 41 certified copies. The 90c 1880 Special Printing on soft paper is notorious for its condition. Thins or more serious faults affect 17. Only twelve are confirmed as sound, and of these only three or four have decent centering. Another twelve need to be reexamined for condition, but most have poor centering.

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE 1880 2-CENT VERMILION AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING, ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL SPECIAL PRINTINGS. ONLY 20 ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS, MANY OF WHICH ARE OFF CENTER.

Our census of Scott 203, available at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/203/203.pdf , contains only 19 stamps which are available to collectors. The 20th copy is in the Miller collection at The New York Public Library. Five of the 19 available stamps have small faults or short perfs. Of the 14 remaining sound copies, we see only two others which rival the stamp offered here for centering and margins.
