Sep. 13” circular datestamp on 1870 Keim correspondence cover to Hartford Conn., mailed from the westbound Pacific Mail Steamer China and transferred while at sea to the eastbound steamer America, magenta China and Japan Steam Service” oval handstamp at left, sender’s routing Per Pacific Mail Steamer America at Sea Pacific Ocean”, defective where opened at right causing loss of part of third stamp, other stamps light corner creases,, scarce, the De Benneville Randolph Keim correspondence from the Far East to his future wife, Jane Amelia Owen, is discussed in an article by Scott Trepel in Chronicle 233 (Feb. 2012, pp. 59-68), Keim sent this cover as a passenger on the outbound trip of the PMSS China, which departed San Francisco on Sep. 1, 1870, it is marked A1” by Jane Owen to indicate it was the first letter she had received since Keim’s departure, the at-sea transfer of this cover is proven by archival evidence of Keim’s departure date and by sailing schedules (Image)
