2253 c Image5c Red Brown (1). Large margins to clear, bright color, tied by blue "Baltimore Md. Aug. 24" circular datestamp and brown manuscript on blue folded letter datelined "Wrightsville Aug. 24/49" and addressed to Baltimore, stamp with small sealed tear at top, Very Fine, unusual use, this was likely hand-carried from Wrightsville Pa. to Baltimore where it entered the mails as an overpaid 2c drop-rate cover, Creighton Hart recorded ten drop-rate covers in his 1972 Chronicle article (this cover is not among those listed), the Alexander census does not specify how many drop-rate covers are known, see lot 2362 for a Way cover from this correspondence (Image)

2254 c Image5c Red Brown (1). Full margins to clear, tied by red grid cancel, matching "Newark N.J. Feb. 14" circular datestamp on lady's small embossed cover to "Dr. M. R. Dennis, 124 Commerce St. Newark", some minor wear, Very Fine, a rare drop-rate use of the 5c 1847 Issue and the only one recorded from Newark N.J., Creighton Hart recorded ten drop-rate covers in his 1972 Chronicle article where he discusses this cover in particular, he notes its use on Feb. 14 and theorizes the sender used a whole stamp to ensure it was delivered properly, the Alexander census does not specify how many drop-rate covers are known, ex Arch and Pope, with 2004 P.F. certificate, (Image)

Davis at 148 MacDougal Street in Philadelphia, red crayon "4" and "2" at upper right may be related to carrier fee (P.F. declines opinion as to its origin and purpose), some slight wear, Very Fine, the "2" handstamp was used to indicate payment in cash of "to the mails" carrier service for a destination outside the old city limits (pre-1854 consolidation -- see article in Chronicle 200 by Dr. Vernon R. Morris, Jr.), with 1992 P.F. certificate (Image)

Feb. 6" circular datestamp on 1849 folded letter addressed "To the Post Master, New York City", content refers to recently-published list of letters held for delivery at New York and provides forwarding address for one, stamp with minor wrinkling, cover with minor wear and file fold well clear of stamp, Very Fine, a very unusual use, this could have been sent free as it is addressed to a postmaster and contains official business, see also lots 2354 and 2415 (Image)
