EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1871 ONE-THIRD BARREL ON GREEN SILK PAPER IN ESSENTIALLY SOUND CONDITION.

The Priester census records only nine examples of this issue on Green paper. This is the fourth we have offered since keeping computerized records, and the three with readable cancels were all used from this same brewery which operated from 1856-1920. It was one of the largest breweries on the West Coast. The founder, John Wieland, died in a tragic fire at his home in 1885, and the brewery was sold to a syndicate in 1890. In the incident which killed Wieland, his son caught fire while getting kerosene from an outer building at his property. Wieland went to help his son and caught fire himself. Then his daughter tried to extinguish the fire engulfing her father, and she also caught fire. He died several days later from the burns, as did his daughter, but his son survived.

Three backstamps. (Image)
