Priester Type 97 surcharge applied inverted at upper right, large margins to full, "S F B Ltd., 10.1.17" perforated cancel, tiny pinhole at top right, Very Fine appearance, this is the only example with inverted surcharge we have encountered, purple "E.L. Green" backstamp, to be consistent Scott Catalogue should give it a separate listing (REA127a) and it should also have its own Priester listing (147aA), unlisted in Scott, Scott Retail as normal (Image)

Neat magenta manuscript surcharge at center, perforated cancel, few minor flaws, Very Fine appearance, the center cutout is unlisted in Scott for the one-hogshead size and none is recorded in the Priester census, according to the Priester book these were used to pay tax on beer in vats drawn off for bottling, the center portion was punched out by the revenue collector and the brewer received the center portion as a receipt, the government retained the rest of the stamp and presumably destroyed them, the other listed cutouts are for sizes larger than one-hogshead (Image)
