Apparently the original lithographic plate used to print the black parts of the design failed to include the commemorative inscription in the top margin and the Japanese Printing Bureau imprint at the bottom, creating the need to produce a second black plate. However, during the second press run at least one sheet (of two panes) did not receive an impression from this second black plate, resulting in the sheet we offer here—the only one ever discovered. The letter, which accompanied this stamp and a similar 8¢ error sent from MacLellan to Wilson, gives a bit of the background of the errors and the provenance of the two Schoberlin examples listed here.
