SS, lightly struck marking in red on January 15 (1851) folded letter datelined San Francisco and addressed to Boston; dateless NY "STEAM SHIP" and "40" rate mark at upper right, manuscript "pr 'Unicorn' str" at lower left; light file fold at center, not affecting the markings, Very Fine and rare, In his 1987 work Theron Wierenga estimates that there are about 25 examples of this marking, he records one other cover from this sailing.
