4   imageGreat Britain, Burritt, Elihu, 1810-1879, the Learned Blacksmith, autograph letter signed, London, 1 Dec 1851, on illustrated Ocean Penny Postage propaganda letterhead, to British publisher William Brown, regarding two of Burritt's articles on Ocean Penny Postage; minor toning at upper right, Very Fine and most attractive.

Burritt was a prominent reformer and activist, supporting such causes as anti-slavery, temperance and, most notably, world peace. He campaigned for the United Kingdom to introduce an international "ocean penny post" and reduce the cost of transatlantic postage from one shilling (12 pence) to threepence, arguing that this would increase international correspondence and trade, and, therefore universal brotherhood. He urged the use of illustrated propaganda envelopes to support the cause.
