3855 73 var. imagePalestine, 1948, Local "Government Tohuwabohu" overprint on 10m gray (Scott 73 var.), used with normal 10m & 15m Pictorials (73, 76), all tied by 18 Apr Hertseliya c.d.s.'s on registered cover to San Francisco, backstamped Haifa (19 Apr), New York (25 Apr) and San Francisco (26 Apr); slightly ragged opening, otherwise Very Fine.

The word tohuwabohu translates to turbulent or chaotic. The overprint, being quite unobtrusive, was apparently unnoticed, and the 10m stamp was accepted as part of the 35m registered letter rate. Reportedly only 132 of the 320 overprinted stamps were used on mail and only a handful are recorded going any farther west than New York.

The addressee, Mrs. C.H. Dent aided the islanders by means of gift parcels, Fine to Very Fine.
