Postal Stationery Collections
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
196 /o   imageU.S., "The Grant Letter Sheet of 1886". An extraordinary collection, most of which is mounted, written up, and ready for exhibiting. The collection starts with four essays comprising (Undersander numbers) E837 in black instead of blue unlisted (50x55 mm); E842a2; as E843, but not the identical item (62x65 mm); E844c, squared up and reduced to 83x98 mm (ex-Brazer). These four essays are followed by the spectacular complete set of 19 trial color proofs, E850a-s, also ex-Brazer. Then, after a few odds and ends, we have the usages: more than 50 used letter sheets featuring all sorts of unusual frankings and exceptional destinations. A few examples include and illustrated letterhead of the Scott Stamp & Coin Co. printed on the inside, Special Delivery usages including E1, E2 & E3 (2), and a Registered usage with an 8¢ Columbian used to pay the registry fee. Among the uprated usages making up the 5¢ U.P.U. rate (with lots of different frankings) we have such destinations as Belgium, British Guiana, Costa Rica, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Haiti, Hawaii, Holland, Hungary, India and Russia, among others. All-in-all, this is truly a fabulous, potentially award-winning collection; one that would take many, many years to duplicate, and, because of that, one that is worth much more than the sum of its parts.
Estimate $15,000 - 20,000. (Image) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5) (Image6) (Image7)
