Ireland
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
1264   imageIreland, 1736-94, Bishop Marks. Collection of sixteen stampless folded letter covers, including 1736 Dublin to Bristol, 1764 Dundrum to London, 1774 Craddockstown to Comte de Serrant, 1783 Dublin Castle to London, 1785 Belfast to Dublin, 1785 Ireland to London, 1791 Listowel to Paris & 1794 Wrexham to Hillsborough, Fine to Very Fine.
Estimate $400 - 600

Irish Bishop marks were introduced as early as 1672 but the early ones are quite rare. Initially the letters were of the sans serif type but in 1746 a new type was introduced with letters in serifed type, and they remained in use until 1795.

1265   imageIreland, 1807-39, Straight Line Postmarks. Collection of 65 covers, and mostly with mileage indication, including Athenry, Belfast, Ballymoney, Carrick-on-Suir, Castlebellingham, Cashel, Colerain, Corey, Cork, Crossmolina, Derby, Dundale, Drogheda, Edenderry, Galway, Golden, Kilbeggan, Kilkenny, Larne, Maryborough, Mullingar, Nenagh, Newry, Rathkeale, Roscrea, Tipperary & Tralee. We also noted two covers to London with "IRELAND" straight-line (57 mm) postmarks. A great lot for the postal historian! Fine to Very Fine.
Estimate $500 - 750

Irish mileage marks, like the Scottish, were not used until 1808, and the mileages used in the handstamps were all measured to the Dublin Office and not to London. Unlike mileage stamps in the rest of the United Kingdom, the removal of mileage figures in the late 1820s did not apply and usage will be found up to the time of Uniform Penny Postage and beyond.

Estimate $300 - 400

This cover was described by Alcock & Holland (The Postmarks of Great Britain & Ireland, page 416, figure 1655), "Although the practice was forbidden, attempts were sometimes made to evade postage by enclosing letters liable to a charge in newspapers or in franked or official letters that were carried free. Dublin had a special stamp for use on letters that were discovered enclosed in these ways. The only specimen we have seen is on a letter of 1831 shown to us by Dr. Stafford Johnson."
