Uganda
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
1378   imageUganda, 1896, Typeset Issue, regular 1a black and overprinted "L", 2a black on cover, leaving Kampala April 15, 1899, with "primitives" 1 anna (SG #55) and 2 annas with L overprint (SG#71), making 3 annas rate to England. During transit in Uganda, a postage due marking was applied and then rescinded, with "T" marking applied, then crossed out in blue crayon. However since the letter was received open in Mboa post office, it was then officially sealed with East Africa Protectorate stamp selvage on the 16th May 1899, some 30 days later during its transit across Uganda! The marking in red by the postmaster of Mboa on the reverse of the envelope could well be in a diluted goat's blood, as was occasionally the case in Uganda as of ink of any color was a scarce commodity. A fabulous cover, the "L" overprint cats £120 with a minimum premium rate x 12 on cover in Gibbons, without any premium affixed to the fabulous usage with selvage used as official seals. An exhibition item, full of character.
