9249 12L2 var. imageBicycle Mail Route, 1894, 25¢ green (Scott 12L2 var.), impression from the defaced plate printed directly on an undated promotional letter from Arthur C. Banta on his "Victory Cyclery" illustrated letterhead; the letter was to have enclosed one of the stamps (not present). The bottom half of the letter reprints three short newspaper articles written about Banta's stamp and his Bicycle Mail Service, which was discontinued when the American Railway Union's strike was settled. Included is a printed version of the original notarized statement attesting to the defacing of the "original Die or Plate"., Very Fine.
