We are pleased to offer specialized collections of French Ballons Montés
and United States Railroad Postal History. A total of 621 lots are included
comprising three specialized
collections: the B.D. Forster Collection of Ballons Montés, the Marigny
Collection of Ballon Montés, and the Hugh V. Feldman Collections of United
States Railroads. Collectors will be
surprised by the depth both specialized groups, which include many rare and
impressive items.
The B.D. Forster collection of Ballons Montés covers was formed over 80
years ago and is one of the finest ever assembled. The collection includes
virtually every flight with many rare usages and destinations. The
collection was last exhibited in the 1956 FIPEX International Exhibition in
New York, where it was awarded a gold medal. Some selected sale highlights
include Nov. 23rd 1870 cover to Panama carried by the Ville
d'Orléans (unique destination); December 12th 1870 cover to Santiago de
Cuba carried by the Ville de Paris (one of two to Cuba); December
12th 1870 to Lima, Peru carried by the Ville de Paris; and December
2 nd 1870 cover to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil carried by the Franklin.
Combined with the Marigny collection there are a remarkable 217 Ballon
Montés and Papillons de Metz lots, a fabulous opportunity for collectors to
acquire items that have never been offered publicly.
The Hugh V. Feldman Collections of United States Railroads of 404 lots
includes numerous rare and unique markings starting with the earliest dated
railroad handstamp of "Baltimore R.R." in 1838, Mohawk & Hudson R.R.
"Rail/Road" two-line 1839 handstamp, numerous 1847 Issue railroad uses
including Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad #1 pair use, Civil War patriotics
and Confederate uses, illustrated advertising designs, etc. We hope you

importance of railroads in the movement of the mails.
