Towle No. SP-6; Estimate $300 - 400.

Remele has never seen this marking on a letter, however in addition to this cover, we are aware of one other cover with this marking which is franked with 1857 3¢ issue. The same marking is often seen cancelling revenue stamps from this border depot.

This cover was sold by Robert A. Siegel in 1953 as part of the famous BURGER & CO. STOCK, PART III (Sale 164, Lot 18).

Cover from Horseheads, N.Y. to Chemung located 13 miles east of Elmira on Route 1003. A branch line from Horseheads running 6 miles south to Elmira was included in the contract for the route. The letter therefore was carried a total of 19 miles between Horseheads and Chemung. On transfer to the main line the Route Agent struck his date stamp for June 21st.

A LOVELY COMBINATION OF THIS SCARCE SHADE WITH A RARE ROUTE AGENT MARKING.

Both Remele and Towle only saw examples with manuscript day of month instead of slugs. Addressed to Vergennes on Lake Champlain and carried east to Rouse's Point on Route 1252. Probably routed south by steamboat on Route 1110 to Burlington and then 23 miles by post road south to Vergennes.
