ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED COVERS BEARING THE 2D DEEP BLUE PLATE II PROVISIONAL IMPERFORATE.

These Provisional Imperforates came about as a result of the breaking of the pins of the 12½ comb machine and the eventual conversion of the perforating instrument to line perforation. While the perforator was withdrawn from service for repair, stamps were issued imperforate. This occurred during three very brief but distinct periods.

LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
6343 o 116 imageNew Zealand, 1864, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 3d brown lilac, perf 12½. Large Star watermark, cancelled by manuscript "K" of Kowai, attractive warm color and clear impression, with comb perforations unusually skewed 3.5°, Very Fine and scarce cancellation, with 2015 Odenweller certificate. Scott No. 33d. Campbell Paterson No. A3d (1).
SG No. 116; £650 ($850).

The vertical skew of the impression with respect to the perforations is a result of a misalignment of the guide dots at the bottom of the plate. This is particularly noticeable on the comb-perforated brown-lilac shade. All other shades are line-perforated.

At this date there was no English Packets taking mail to Marseilles, the service having been terminated and mail was being sent via Brindisi. Although this cover is endorsed via "San Francisco" it appears to have been crossed out and it certainly did not go by this route. The December mails left Sydney on December 31st 1872 and Melbourne on January 2nd 1873 aboard the "Bangalore". The mail reached Galle on January 22nd and Suez on February 8th. The Southampton mail was transferred to the "Massilia" at Alexandria on February 11th and the "via Brindisi" mails went on the "Poonah" on February 10th.
