A REMARKABLE REGISTERED COVER WITH THREE-COLOR FRANKING AND THE SOLE RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE INVERCARGILL REGISTERED DATESTAMP.

Sent to connect with the P&O steamer "Madras" leaving Sydney May 21st 1864, arriving Suez July 4th. Sent overland to Alexandria then by P&O steamship "Euxine" leaving July 6th and arriving at Marseilles July 12th. The mail "Via Marseilles" arrived 36 hours earlier than the "all sea" route.

A MAJOR CHALON HEAD RARITY WITH ONLY SEVEN RECORDED UNUSED EXAMPLES, THIS BEING ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN.

As an indication of rarity, the 1d orange vermilion on pelure paper (SG 81) has been absent from such major collections as Hind, Caspary, Dale-Lichtenstein, "Chalon" and Bartrop. The Hackmey collection contained two unused examples without gum. The original gum example offered here is an outstanding rarity.
