1002   image[California Miner's Letter near Eldorado] "Californy Janaury the 1 1854". Datelined on two page ALS of Andrew W. Cairn, a miner in California writing on New Years day, letter reads in part "…I suppose you think me numbered with the dead by this time but I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am still about and diging gold as usual…I have been the most of the past sumer exploring the gold digins and the result of mi travels is tht the mines in the vicinity of the Amarican River is as good as any of the other mining districks. I am mining in dead hors canyon near Eldorado canyon. it is rather dull times her at present for want of water. The most of the diffings are in the hills and water is brout in canals or ditches. there has been no rain of any consequence this winter…"; some erosion in one spot, F.-V.F.

1003   imageEight Scenes of Mining Life and a View of the Elephant (Baird 293). Published and sold by [William B.] Cooke & [Josiah J.] LeCount, San Francisco book sellers and stationers, trimmed gray lithograph 10.25x7.75", with one page miner's letter that reads in part: "Gray Eagle Sity, October 3, 1852. Mr. William Cairns…You informed me that you received the gold dust I sent you which is the first I have heard from you or the dust since I sent it…mi minig operation they have been discouraging. I have fumed the river and have not got a dime. I have been engaged the past summer in the eureka bar… we have burned about 1400 feet at a cost of 1500 dollars besides the labour of 25 mn since the first of may…which has proved a totel failure…there is about 3 miles of flume all joined commencing at the great horseshoe…I understand the miners have been more successful further down the river…Gray eagle sity is on the middle fork of the American river about 4 miles above the big bage…"; file folds and toning, Fine.

1007       imageJackson, Cal., Apr 23 (Amador). Bold cds (CAL-1280, unlisted for Amador) on small folded letter sheet to Geneva, Switzerland, manuscript "Paid 26" rating, red "New York, Am. Packet, May 30" and Paris transit cds's with manuscript "10" decimes due rate, partial receiving backstamp, Very Fine, a rare usage of the type Jackson postmark used in Amador county in 1855.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

This first postmark is known used between June of 1851 and July of 1852 when Jackson was in Calaveras county. This later usage in Amador, after Jackson saw two other postmark devices, is unlisted for this county.

Nov 1" cds and matching "Paid" and framed "40" rating handstamp, interesting letter reads in part "I take this opportunity to inform you that I am well George is the same I have sent 62½ ounces of gold dust and it worth one thousand Dollars hear at sixteen Dollars per ounce and I want one of the boys to take t to Philadelphia to the mint and get all it is worth $20 per oz it will make $2.50 difference and that is worth the trouble…I have not got any letter from you since I left home… but I shall not be able to get your letter until next spring as I am going four hundred miles back in the country and shall not be able to get them out of the office if they do come…"; edge wear, Fine and interesting gold rush letter.
