547 CVR 4, 4xii image1858 Cross Border Cover with 3d Major Re-Entry, mailed Toronto AUG.19.1858 (broken circle free strike) to Penfield, New York, franked with two extremely fine 3d red Beaver imperforate singles paying the 6d cross-border rate, both cancelled by Toronto square grids. The right stamp has a very clear, cancel-free major re-entry (showing strong doubling at bottom, especially noticeable under both numerals and in oval below "EE PENCE") from position 61 of pane B. A lovely and fresh cover (missing part of back) and a great item to show this major re-entry, very fine and ex Hart. Accompanied by a 2015 Greene Foundation certificate. The cover is endorsed "Per Canadian Line Aug 20 / 59" and is franked with a 7½d green Queen Victoria imperforate with huge margins (showing part of next stamp at top), tied by a 4-ring #21 cancel. 551 CVR 14 image1862 Cover from Rugby to Toronto, mailed Rugby (Simcoe County, MAR.11.1862 manuscript precursor postmark is the earliest of only a few recorded examples) to Toronto (MAR.12 receiver) through Barrie (MAR.11 transit), franked with a horizontal strip of 5 of the 1c rose Queen Victoria issue, cancelled by pen strokes. Vertical crease at left of the stamps, very fine. Manuscript postmarks are scarce on stamped covers.

A rarely offered collection giving one the opportunity to follow this fascinating stamp's development over the span of its first two years (out of 27 years). We note the listed shades of copper red, rose, deep rose plus many more intermediate shades, as well as a good selection of postmarks throughout this collection (2-ring numerals, fancy corks, duplex, town cancels, etc.), also frankings of one, two or three stamps paying various rates, either relative to weight or cross-border destination. Quality is better than usual for these, with few faults to speak of, overall fine to very fine.
