Canada Airmail continued...
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
1221 CVR   image1921 St. John's-Botwood-Fogo Flight Covers, both covers postmarked at St. John's (MAR.10.1921) with one cover franked with 4c Caribou and the second with a 5c Caribou stamp. Both covers received a Fogo broken circle (MAR.28.1921) postmark on the reverse. Mail was forwarded to Botwood by rail from St. John's, with the plane landing on the ice at Fogo and returning to Botwood later that day. AMCN2 value $150 each, which would indicate a low number of covers were flown. Both covers have a light crease in the middle of the envelope, and should be an item of interest for the airmail specialist. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (All Scans)

1222 CVR   imageTwo First Arctic Experimental Mail Test Covers of North-West Passage, both addressed to R.W. Hale who prepared 50 covers for the test, and was the Postal Superintendent in Edmonton. The first cover is the west to east leg (AMCN2-3819) and is postmarked at Coppermine, N.W.T. (JUL.23.1938) on the front, and after being carried by motor ship and dog teams arrived at Fort Ross, N.W.T. in September 1939, which was too late to connect with the R.MS. Nascopie. The back of the cover was then postmarked with a Fort Ross (SEP.12.1940) c.d.s. and an oval Eastern Arctic Mail Service (SEP.12.1940) postmark, with a stop at Ivigtut, Greenland (OCT.04.1940) postmark, and the end of the journey with an Edmonton (OCT.17.1940) c.d.s. postmark. The second cover is the east to west leg (AMCN2-3820), posted at Lake Harbour, N.W.T. (JUL.20.1938) broken circle on the front with receiving postmarks on the reverse from Craig Harbour, N.W.T. (AUG.26.1938), Eastern Arctic Mail Service (AUG.31.1938), Coppermine, N.W.T. (JAN.20.1940) and Edmonton (JAN.27.1940). The lot includes two contemporary reports by R.W. Hale, which provide details not included in the AMCN2 catalogue. Both covers have signatures from the pilot, R.M.S. Nascopie Captain and Postal Superintendents. Clean and very fine.
