541 CVR 249, 254 image1946 Cover Mailed to Germany, Returned to Sender in Ambulance Cover, 1c + 4c War issues on cover mailed from Toronto on DEC.17.1946 to Germany, probably couldn't be found and was sent back with two RETOUR handstamps on front, plus a number of notations in German on back. Arrived back Toronto (oval datestamp) on FEB.25.1947 and sent to District Director of Postal Services / Toronto (purple circular datestamp dated next day), then on to Ottawa, where it received a bright red INSPECTION DIVISION / DEAD LETTER OFFICE (bilingual) machine cancel (with dater at right) dated MAR.24.1947 (the first we have seen of this machine). They probably opened the letter and found the addressee's address in Toronto and mailed it back to him in an ambulance cover with the same bright red machine (this one is undated) with 3c in postage dues and a note reading "You owe Postie" beside. The cover was mailed back with an accompanying form giving a lengthy explanation of why it is useful to put your name and address on the outside of your letters (in both French and English). Very interesting items. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (Scan 3) (All Scans)
