270 CVR.   image1896 3c domestic letter rate advertising cover, originally mailed unfranked at Truro, NS (postmarked with RPO c.d.s. dated MAR.2.1896), then boxed "RETURNED-FOR / DEFICIENT-POSTAGE / 3c" directional marking applied plus "unpaid" in blue crayon, sent to Dead Letter Office where 3c vermilion stamp was applied, tied by a Dead Letter Office broken circle (MAR.4.1896 - also second strike on back). Illustrated advertising for "Bigelow Hood, Manufacturers of Aerated Waters" Back also shows advertising in red, such as "Best Ginger Ale in Canada", etc. Two light vertical creases and a tiny rust stain where a pin was left, else very fine. 272 CVR.   image1885 2c Militia Concession rate cover, franked with a 2c green, cancelled by a target cancel, paying the very scarce soldier's letter rate. Mailed at Sharon, Ont. (broken circle dated MAY.4.1885) to Major Wayling at Qu'Appelle N.W.T. Newmarket and Qu'Appelle Station, Assa. transit datestamps on back. Major Wayling was in command of Newmarket and Sharon, and was detailed for active service in the North West in a place christened Fort Wayling, about 28 miles from Qu'Appelle. Slightly reduced at left, still a lovely and rare use of the 2c value, fine-very fine. (Unitrade 36)

2c soldier's concessionary rate covers are rare, with Arfken reporting only 24 examples (a few additional covers have since been found), one which is from the same correspondence (Sharon to Winnipeg, illustrated in BNA Topics v.42, Nov.-Dec. 1985 p.26). This cover is very much the better of the two.

Mailed from Toronto (undated) to Kingston. Tiny corner crease on one stamp from overlapping the tag and corner crease caused by the sender folding it over to punch a hole through for attaching the tag to the item being mailed. 281 CVR.   image1876 1c private post card, franked with 1c yellow perforated 11½x12, tied by a broken circle datestamp, paying the 1c post card rate. Mailed from Meaford, Ont. (OCT.27.1876) to Eugenia. An extremely early private post card, from the Meaford Monitor, illustrated in bright red and green, with hand written note on message side. It took 19 years after the use of this post card before private post cards were formally authorized by the Post Office Department. Private postcards used in the 1870s are exceptionally rare, with the example offered being particularly attractive. (Scan a)

The card recipient sent it back to the sender (Ancient Order of United Workingmen Assessment Notice) along with dues paid, and the sender sent it back to the same recipient (Sep 9 machine dater), with a 1c yellow added to pay the post card rate, in order to confirm receipt of funds.
