421 image1916 WW I Submarine Mail Cover to USA and Returned to Sender, lightweight envelope franked with 20pf Germania tied by Frankfurt 30.12.16 cds, proper service and return markings, central vertical fold, still Fine and rare, accompanied by some collateral materialrnIn Dec 1916 the Reichspostamt began using German cargo submarines for mail service. Each letter had to be marked "Tauchbootbrief" and could not weigh more than 60g - postage was determined at UPU rates. A special fee was required to defray the extra expense of handling this mail and letters weighing not more than 20g were charged an additional 2M. In Feb 1917 the forwarding of mail by submarine was suspended and the Reichspost Ministry ordered the return to the sender of all submarine mail still in the system. In addition to the cancel of the dispatching office, the covers bore a Bremen submarine mail cancel and a blue handstamp indicating "Return to sender due to suspension of submarine and mail traffic".
