An extraordinary diverse range of material mint and used, housed in 7 boxes of different shapes and sizes, strictly for Canal Zone workaholics! This represents clearing out desk and drawer of all items that were not assembled into the main collection including stamps and postal history. Blocks and large multiples are also here as they often did not fit into the main body of the collection as well. Many items await further research especially on the o/p varieties, settings etc. Much is simply here because it was still waiting to be written up. There are 1000s of stamps housed on stockcards, glassine envelopes, album pages. needing a very good sort to categorise and organise what is here. Collectors or dealers interested in this area should make this a must-see on their viewing list. We have chosen a few items at random from this often chaotic accumulation to give you a flavor of what is here: 1910 8cts (#34) mint block of four, 1911 10cts on 13cts gray (#36) corner block of four mint and mint never hinged block of six, 1926 20cts carmine (#92) mint plate block of six, 1909 2cts marginal block of four mint (#32) showing 'ZCNE' broken letter error on one stamp, range of 1904/05 '8 cts' surcharges inc. types with both 'Panama' (13mm) reading up, etc. Many mint blocks of four inc the 1904 10cts yellow including one block with heavily shifted o/p showing inverted 'M' error, 1904 5cts with violet handstamp (#2) mint and used on piece, 1918 1ct o/p type IV (#52) x7 mint, through to 1934 3cts booklet pane (#117a) x5 mint, interesting range of perfin 'P' officials mint and used, precancels, etc, etc, forming an extraordinary collector's working stock. There is also present a comprehensive Scott specialty collection of Panama well-filled from the imperf classics through to the back of the book. A highly recommended viewing for the specialist or dealer, a most interesting important balance lot to value carefully with so much more here than described.
When this first came through the door we could hardly believe our eyes, originally in four substantial boxes now repackaged into ,three bigger boxes, mostly prisoner of war, often to the same addressees, WWI and WWII. We estimate there must be ,in the range of ,5000 covers here with many seeeing light of day for the first time in decades, reflecting a lifetime of buying. At least half the items are from the first world war with two of the four cartons devoted to this period, with much from German Prisoners of War in France with the 'P.G. Vise' handstamps for 'prisonnier de guerre' from the various regions in blue, purple and boxed red, also the black boxed 'prisonniers de guerre Romans verifie par les interpretes' and some with additional violet triangular censor marks of Vienna, as well as refusal of delivery cachets 'cette enveloppe ne sera pas remise au destinataire' in purple or red box. In the WWI material there is also a section for uncensored mail to the heads of camps and 'depots' in Southern France inc. Givors, Grange-Blanche, Lyon-Vaise, St. Foy-L'Argentiere, etc, addressed 'monsieur le chef de detachement des prisonniers de guerre' as well as cachets designating mail to prisoner detachments at factories and railways in the South. The WWII half is just as diverse and shows a similar level of organisation put in by the collector, mainly Italian and French prisoners grouped by camp, with a wonderful variety of shapes and colors of the handstamps of the various Stalags, 'besetz gebiet' markings, etc. virtually everything with multiple strikes, usually clear and crisp. Also noted U.S. Army censor markings, German Prisoners from British camps, mail to German camp commandants, etc, etc. This is a fascinating holding with lots of written content here and it makes interesting reading knowing that every word counts in the limited space allowed for the prisoner to send his message home. A great opportunity as the retail value could be $10-$20++ each, some a lot more, therefore ,about $50,000 to $100,000+ potential on ebay when described cover for cover.
One man's collection, covering a plethora of many themes such as costumes, mountain exploration, early motor cars, bridges, , railway stations, trains, palm decked street scenes, boats, liners, flying machines, world records such as the giant of a French Departement, humor, catastrophe cards, military inc Canadian encampment etc, etc. There are colored as well as black and white, fairly occasionally stamps with postmarks on the outside of the cards, these again are all virtually late ,19th ,century/early ,20th ,century. There is considerable strength in central Europe especially Southern France, Toulon and Upper Savoy with much scarce that would delight anyone interested in these particular areas. Many of these postcards would easily sell for $10++, some $20++ each on EBay, some for much more. However, it would also be a very good collection to build on, particularly for some of the themes mentioned above. Please note that occasionally that some of the albums have postcards stacked underneath each other, making a challenging viewing to see the depth of what is here. Condition overall is excellent and we estimate that there must be 1000+++ items here. An opportunity for collector or dealer, representing the filled album sections of this estate, offered intact as received.
One man's working stock in , partially filled albums and loose, there must be well over 1000 cards, both in black and white and in color. Much is from France, as well as French North Africa, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, with native scenes inc. nomadic camps, bedouin women, etc, also French Guiana, French Pacific, etc. There is also plenty of WWI related inc. German prisoners in North Africa being marched by Algerian horsemen, 'troupes noires' African servicemen on the Western front, WWI battleships, poetic and allegorical cards of the allies in color, atrocities of the Germans in France, artillerymen performing feats of carrying, also various 'correspondance des armees de la Republique' stationery with colored flags of the Allies, a similar card even more colorful for Italy, etc. Some of the popular themes throughout the holding include casinos, early motorcars, ski-ing, local costumes, turn-of-the-century racial typology, , humorous cartoons, lots of early silk embroidered cards including elephant, etc, etc. Please note this is not a residual leftover balance. This is the collector's accumulation and relatively recent purchases, waiting to be made into collections to further fill his albums. This is a most interesting holding well worth spending time on with much more here to discover.
While there is some pre-WWII, the vast majority is post 1945, nearly all Hungarian including the Roosevelt set of 8 on FDC, etc. The substantial value is in the wide range of topicals present, many covers used on a commercial registered basis which in itself is unusual, including plenty of miniature sheets with considerable diversity with very little duplication. The wide variety of themes include planes, zeppelins, space, athletics, architecture, religious iconography, wildlife including birds, horses and butterflies, the arts, mosaics, Olympics, cartoons, Europe, famous people, military, vintage motorcars, flowers and fauna, motorcycles, stamp on stamps, sailboats , etc, etc. While there are a few large, the vast majority would fit the album page and these are all across the board attractive, with the overwhelming majority with many different stamps on them. Retail value potential, particularly because of the miniature sheets could easily exceed $10,000+ with plenty of $10 to $30+ items here, although we could find no prices anywhere, as the vast majority of this represents one individual correspondence to Pittsburgh, PA, accumulated over many years. Absolutely an opportunity for a topical enthusiast or for a cover/ show dealer interested in a good one of a kind range of Hungarian postal history, primarily post WWII as an original transatlantic correspondence.
A most interesting range of material put together with stamps and covers, page for page. There are well over 50 covers including crash mail with highlights from Austria such as the 1962 disaster through to successful flights with the Swiss Bellinzona with special vignette and red rocket pmk, Germany inc signed Zucker mail, as well as plenty of other interesting vignettes on and off cover, even miniature sheets with ones seldom seen such as the 1962 Vojsko-Lotnictvo-Kosmos bicolored. Also present the combined country miniature sheet triangulars Belgium, Netherlands and Germany Europa flights, followed by further sheets such as the 1961 imperfs, etc. Other countries include 1958 US rocket flights from Nevada to St Bernardino, the scarce French Andorra 1962  ,Zucker with large map vignette  ,with the omnibus satellite of Andorra etc etc. Time and space do not permit further description, save this is one man&rsquo,s collection with plenty of scarce items present in this increasingly popular area of philately.
