1629 ng 81 image#81, 1897 4c Small numeral surcharge on 3c Red revenue stamp, an extraordinarily handsome unused single of the rarest revenue surcharge next to the "Small Dollar" surcharge, this example is especially fresh with luxuriant color and sharp impression on bright paper, remarkably well centered within large margins, plus its perforations are crisp and even, extremely fine; because of the great rarity of the "Small Dollar" surcharge, many are unaware of the rarity of the small numeral "4 cents" surcharge, which was replaced with the large numeral surcharge because the value was too small, after only two sheets of 100 were issued, the example offered here is an unusually choice and desirable example of this extremely rare stamp despite its lack of gum (Chan #85; $8,000.00). 1631 ng 85 var. image#85 var., 1897 $5.00 Surcharge on 3c Red revenue, shifted surcharge, unused example of this rare high value, without gum as usually found, interestingly the design is centered to the top with the surcharge strongly shifted to the bottom so that "5 dollars" is almost entirely in the large bottom margin, fresh color on bright paper with detailed impressions of both the stamp and the surcharge, desirable and most interesting variety; it is recorded that 5,000 stamps were issued of this value, however its extreme rarity is due to the use of this stamp to send money drafts of up to $10.00 securely through the mail, these remittance certificates with the stamps on them were routinely destroyed, making the number of used or unused stamps available to collectors extremely limited, additionally many of the few existing unused stamps were taken off certificates explaining why lack of gum is the norm; the shifted overprint is not listed in either Scott or Chan (or Ma) and the catalog values are for the normal stamp (Chan #91, $8,000.00+). (Image) $7,500.00+

SOLD for $7,000.00

1632 og 85a image#85a, 1897 $5.00 Surcharge on 3c Red revenue, inverted surcharge, an extraordinarily fresh and attractive single of this amazingly rare high value error, this stamp is in a condition quite exceptional for this, possessing intense vibrant color with the impressions of both the stamp and the overprint being razor sharp, crisp even perforations all around, plus being fairly well centered as well, slightly disturbed o.g., very fine; any of the $5.00 surcharges are rare because most of the mere 5,000 issued were destroyed after their use on draft certificates, the inverted surcharge variety is particularly rare and valuable, not only because of its popularity, but because of the limited number that were issued, Dr. Ma estimates that the inverted surcharge is about three times as rare as the normal; the example offered here is especially desirable because of its premium condition (Chan #91a; $16,000.00). (Image) $15,000.00
