Ia, magnificently fresh, gloriously rich color in an intense shade, superbly detailed impression on immaculate paper, extraordinarily well centered particularly when compared to the minute existing population, intact perforations all around, full o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine. To our knowledge the example offered here is the finest One Cent perforated Type Ia original gum mint single in existence. Ranking as one of the most challenging United States stamps to find in any condition mint or unused, it is understandable why virtually none of the great U.S. collections ever formed had an example of Scott #19. We spent hours researching past "name" auctions of the last 50 years trying to find a single mint example and the list of sales devoid of this stamp reads like a "Who's Who" of United States philately: Ambassador (1966), Cole (1988), Concord (1994), Golin (1999), Hetherington (1980), Hewitt (1986), Isleham (1986), Lyons (2000), Moody (1950), Newbury (1961) and Waterhouse (1955). The Caspary sale (1956) had an example in a sheet-margin block of four (bottom left stamp) which has remained intact over the years in the Lilly (1967), Ishikawa (1993) and Floyd (2001) collections. That particular example, while quite fresh, does not possess as fine as centering as the stamp offered here. Only the Lilly collection had an original gum single (not contained within a multiple) and it too was not as nearly well centered as the McKinney example. A truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire the only choice original gum example of this great U.S. rarity in existence. We fully expect that the current Scott catalog evaluation will bear little relationship to the final auction realization of this remarkable rarity. Accompanied by a 1999 PF certificate. I, incredibly fresh, sumptuously rich and unmistakable brick red color, strong detailed impression, well centered with the perforations on three sides being well clear and just barely touching at left, full original gum that has been relatively lightly hinged, tiny natural inclusion speck mentioned for complete accuracy only, very fine and exceedingly choice. Any certified original gum example of the 1857 Five Cent Brick Red is an enormous rarity, as this stamp ranks among the most elusive in all of United States philately to find both sound and with original gum. In fact, we estimate that there may be no more than two dozen such examples in existence, with nearly two thirds of this select group having varying degrees of faults. This leaves less than ten sound original gum examples available and we can find no famous name collection which contained a finer example than the one offered here. The reality is that most of the important name collectors of mint U.S. stamps over the past 50 years or so lacked this stamp, as they never encountered an opportunity to acquire such a stamp during their collecting lifetime. Today's serious collectors of original gum United States stamps will certainly recognize the offering of the McKinney example as one of their few chances literally in a lifetime to acquire one of the key mint rarities of United States philately. The last appearance of this stamp at public auction in June 1999 (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc., Sale #812) resulted in a record realization of $35,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, after highly competitive bidding. I, position 100R1, an incomparable bottom sheet-margin mint single, possessing essentially perfect centering amid uncharacteristically large margins, brilliantly fresh, with rich vibrant color and a clean crisp impression on bright paper, uniformly even and intact perforations all around, full original gum, lightly hinged, superb. The enormous rarity of the 1857 Ten Cent Green Type I in mint condition, particularly with original gum, cannot be overstated. To find one offered at auction in any condition happens probably no more than one or twice a year (if that "frequent"). To find one in the spectacular quality offered here is an occasion that easily qualifies as a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. In fact, this stamp as a single has never been offered at auction before, as it has always been part of a larger multiple that was broken up to yield what is, without question, the finest mint Scott #31 in existence. The only mint example that comes close to the quality of the McKinney copy was sold in our May 1998 sale of the Eliot H. Weisman collection of United States stamps. His example, also a bottom sheet-margin copy, was quite fresh and retained its original gum. While the Weisman example was very well centered it did not possess the superb centering that this stamp boasts. It realized $28,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, versus its then current catalog value of $12,000.00. It is not unreasonable to expect that the McKinney example will shatter the Weisman realization - and deservedly so. Accompanied by a 2000 PF certificate. (Image) 16,500.00
