626 og 544 image#544, 1c Green sheet waste, perf. 11, brilliantly fresh, sumptuously rich color and a well incised impression, quite well centered for this stamp, full o.g., lightly hinged, with tiny traces of red offset as found on several of the existing copies, very fine. A choice example of this incredibly rare mint stamp, of which fewer than 20 are thought to exist unused in any condition. The immense rarity of this stamp is due to the fact that this perforated 11 variety was produced in very limited quantities and its issuance was never publicly announced. In fact, its existence was not discovered until 1936, fully 14 years after it was initially printed and it was not given Scott catalog status until 1938. The vast majority of these stamps, whether mint or used, are typically found terribly off center or have been damaged (or both). An exciting opportunity to acquire a stamp that ranks as one of the rarest mint stamps in United States philately. Inexplicably undercataloged in Scott considering that when this stamp makes an infrequent appearance at auction it always realizes multiples of its catalog value. In fact, a similarly centered never hinged example realized $62,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, in the 2000 "Rarities of the World Sale" (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc.), versus its never hinged catalog value of $22,500.00. While this copy is not never hinged, it ranks among the finest known, and hinging is quite irrelevant on a stamp that exists in such minute quantities. Accompanied by a 1992 PF certificate. 636 ng 594 image#594, 1c Green coil waste, an enormously rare unused example of this stamp, being one of only 21 unused examples recorded, while centered a bit to right as are virtually all known copies, this particular stamp is far better centered than most, as its perforations clear the design unlike most others, rich color which is just slightly discolored, mild stain spot at bottom right and a thin spot, very fine centering; despite the aforementioned flaws, this stamp ranks as one of the great unused rarities in United States philately, and of the 21 recorded, ten have no gum and eight more have only small traces of original gum (having been peeled off of post cards), and all but six have varying degrees of faults, as does this particular copy; 1983 PF certificate; the Scott catalog notes "No. 594 is valued without gum; both unused and used are valued with perforations just touching frameline on one side." 640 O 596 image#596, 1c Green, rotary press perforated 11, used, bold "Kansas City/MO." Bureau precancel, extraordinarily well centered for this difficult stamp, with its perforations clear of the design all around, deep luxuriant color, small thinned area at bottom right, otherwise very fine. An exceptionally handsome appearing example of one of the greatest rarities in United States philately, with a mere twelve copies recorded - all of which are used. There is no known unused copy. Of the twelve recorded, seven have the Kansas, City Mo. Bureau precancel as found on this stamp. The realizations of the last three #596's to appear at auction give potential bidders some insight as to the true market value of this immensely rare stamp. In the October 1998 sale of the Robert Zoellner collection, a machine cancelled copy whose centering was not quite as nice as the Lessin example, having slightly irregular perforations at left and a corner perf. crease at top right, sold for $88,000.00 (including premium). In the 2000 "Rarities of the World" sale (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc., May 2000) a sound precancelled copy, whose centering was slightly inferior to the Lessin example, sold for $104,500.00 (including premium). Finally, in our October 2001 sale of the William S. Floyd collection, an especially well centered machine cancelled copy, with a minute corner crease at top right and a tiny tear, realized $93,500.00 (including premium). The fact that three Scott #596's appeared on the auction market in the last three years, and now a fourth with the Lessin copy, may give the false impression that this stamp is relatively "available" when a serious collector wants to finally fill one of the most challenging spaces in their album. The reality is that a collector could wait years before another makes an appearance. In fact, we have known several collectors who never had the opportunity to acquire this famous rarity during their collecting career. Accompanied by a 1951 PF certificate. (Image) for fine 55,000.00
