Image#U215 var., 90c Carmine on blue, die 70, size 25, knife 123, wmk. 6, exceedingly rare large mint entire, fresh and crisp with bright colors, marvelously well preserved and lacking the typical flaws that are found on large size envelopes of this age, extremely fine; nearly all the high denomination envelopes were issued as a matter of course in legal size for large enclosures requiring the high postage, but the 90c on oriental buff was only issued in a small size 13 envelope and most of the 90c on blue were issued in this same size 13, however a second size on blue paper was made in the very large size 25, whether very few were issued or virtually all were used for cut squares is not known, but this size envelope is of the utmost rarity, this example is one of a mere three reported; E. Norman Lurch in a Postal Stationery article comments on this specific envelope, that George Slawson, a Vermont school teacher of limited means but an avid postal stationery collector, came down to New York for the 1955 Barkhausen sale specifically to buy this one envelope to complete his collection of Plimpton high denomination entires, he was greatly disappointed when it sold for $800.00 or $900.00, which was far beyond his means, against a Thorp catalog value of only $25.00, kept inordinately low because the editor didn't have an example of this in his collection; ex-Barkhausen (UPSS #639). One of the most sought-after of all the entires, with a mere four examples reported.
