Imperial Administration handstamped British East Africa 1895 (July 9): Handstamped set of fifteen values from ½ a. to 5 r. used, including both printings of the 4½ a., and additional ½ a., 1 a. (2) and 8 a., fresh and generally very fine, 2 a. vermilion top marginal, 4½ a. fine used with squared circle datestamp, 5 a. and 7½ a. used in Lamu, three high values from edge of sheet with 2 r., 4 r. and 5 r. all used in Lamu. Overprinted on India at the Zanzibar Gazette 1895/96: Overprint on India, the complete set of fifteen values, together with the Dec 1895 2½ a. on 1 a. 6 p. sepia, applied to six pieces from the Bechuanaland Collection of stamps received from the UPU in Berne, all handstamped "CANCELLED" in black. The high values are not the 'smaller overprint' normally associated with the stamps sent to the UPU in Berne. Overprinted on India at the Zanzibar Gazette 1895/96: India 2 a. 6 p. yellow-green overprinted, a used example showing variety "Brit1sh" for British, neatly cancelled by LAMU code A squared circle datestamp (Feb 16, 1896) in black. The sole recorded example used in Lamu. Extremely rare, this error was corrected almost immediately after the first printing and its sheet position is uncertain, see "British East Africa" by John Minns, pages 70-71. Just three examples are recorded therein, one of which is housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III. Unique. Cert. RPSL (1933) Gi = £ 5'500.rnrnNote: The "Brit1sh" error is found on only four values: ½ a., 1 a., 2 a. and 2½ a.
