427 image1854, Registered, 1 s. rose-pink and blue, used on registered cover, from Geelong to London, touching top left otherwise good to large margins, endorsed "Per the Antelope Steamer", dated 15 December 1854, tied by "2/V" cancel in black, rated at 1 shilling in red for ship letter and additional 1 shilling in black for incoming packet and UK regsitration, oblong "TOO LATE" in red alongside, with London "PAID" 17 March 1855 also to front, to reverse Geelong, Melbourne and London marks, small tear top, slight soiling, scarce early use of this stamp, rare cover; the prepayment of postage with stamps became compolsory from 1st January 1855, a usage like this could only occur during this month. 429 image1858: Rouletted 2 d. violet, 6 d. blue, with 1859 1 d. yellow-green and octagonal 1 s. blue, all used on 1859 entire letter from Melbourne to the College of Arms in London endorsed "via Marseilles", tied by barred "1" numeral obliterators of Melbourne in black. Melbourne despatch cds on reverse (July 16) in black. The contents refer to a Mr. Booth's request for a Coat of Arms and his requirements (three Boar's Heads). The stamps with one or two imperfections but a fine four colour franking for the 1/9d. rate; London arrival (Sept 14) in red on obverse. A most attractive entire. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Cert. RPSV (2008). rnRemarks: The "Philatey from Australia" first reported this error in March 1952. The certification of this stamp led to its listing in the 2010 Stanley Gibbons catalogue. Interesting content: "I regret to inform you I am not in a position to honour (your draft) having been involved in the universal commercial panic which has surged this place and Sydney in common with the rest of the Australian Colonies, I have been compelled to stop payment...stock has been greatly depreciated". 30332 image1846 (Jan 21/Feb 17): Entire letter from Melbourne to the Naval & Military Gazette in London, endorsed "per first Ship to England", prepaid '3d.' in red manuscript for local rate and charged '8d.' due in manuscript for incoming Ship Letter on arrival. Reverse with oval "MELBOURNE / â™› / PORT PHILLIP" datestamp (Feb 19), London SHIP-LETTER in black and arrival cds (June 29). Interesting content "We are very anxious for accounts from New Zealand, Col. Defsard had advanced with 700 men of the 58th - 96th accompanied by the Governor....Sir E. Wilmot has formed a new Council and Van D. Land is quieter...Major Cotton has begun to form works for supplying Hobart Town with water....a Mr. Beauvais, Master of the Barque "Kestrel" is to be tried this week for murdering several of his Lascar crew...17 Feby. The New Zealand Chiefs have given in and have surrendered, a grand fight took place on the 11th Jany. when the natives were well thrashed". (this last refers to Kororareka).
