The addressee, Wilhelm Ottomar Gerke, arrived at Adelaide in 1847 aboard the German ship 'Hermann von Beckerath'. He must have been of some prominence to have been appointed Justice of the Peace.

The stamp is rated RRRR, making this one of the rarest Departmental frankings. Number 1 in Anthony Presgrave's Census of only three 'G.P.' covers, and illustrated by Ron Butler at page 93.
Philip Levi arrived at Adelaide in 1838 from England. He was a prominent businessmen with extensive land holdings in the Far North. Oulnina was one of the properties his company, Levi & Co, disposed of in 1870. In 1863, he had been a founder of the Adelaide Club. Levi's home Vale House was gifted to the Town of Walkerville in 1948. His Wikipedia entry states, with straight-faced irony, "He is remembered by Levi Caravan Park". Kirby's Criterion Hotel was established in 1857 as the Family Hotel at 137 King William Street, & was renamed the Criterion in 1867. It was demolished in 2010.
