193 FX-HO1 var. imageHonolulu, Hawaii (FX-HO1 var.), registration no. "2866" applied with a manual numbering machine, on a fabulous registered round-the-world coveroriginating in New York City on June 17, 1903 and traveling through 14 cities in 11 countries, winding up back in New York on June 14, 1904; also present are exchange office registry labels from San Francisco, Hong Kong & British Guiana. As would be expected, despite being a heavy, linen-lined envelope (about 12" x 5"), the cover is somewhat battered, as are some of the stamps. It is, nonetheless, quite a remarkable piece of postal history.predating by many years the proliferation of such covers after the introduction of round-the-world airmail. One of only 7 known Honolulu labels.

Identifiable 1903 postmarks are New York City (Jun 17), St. John's, Newfoundland (Jun 6), Vancouver, B.C. (Jul 2 & 7), San Francisco (Jul 10), Christchurch & Auckland, N.Z. (Aug 6/11), Honolulu (Aug 25), Hong Kong (Sep 23). Then, in 1904, after a delay of more than four months, The cover wnet to Hong Kong (Feb 4), Colombo, Ceylon (Mar 5), Johannesburg, Transvaal (Apr 3, 4, 6, 9), Batavia & Soerabaja, Dutch Indies (Apr 15, 17), London & Fulham, England (Apr 30/May 6), Georgetown, Br. Guiana (Jun 2) and back to New York City (Jun 14). It was re-addressed and posted in every country but Ceylon (Hawaii using U.S. stamps and Vancouver using Canadian.
