Session Four (lots 2601-2880): Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at 1:30pm continued...

1870-71 National Bank Note Co. Grilled Issue (Scott 134-144) continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2752 ng Image30c Black, H. Grill (143). Unused (traces of original gum), intense shade, several clear vertical rows of grill points

FINE AND RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 30-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE GRILLED ISSUE. ESPECIALLY SCARCE IN SOUND CONDITION.

The 30c National Grilled issue is one of the couple most difficult denominations to obtain in sound and unused condition. The centering on the example here typifies how this issue is normally found, but a review of our computerized records found that only a small potion of those we have offered were sound.

Ex Hoffman. With 1988 P.F. certificate. Scott value as no gum (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. THE 10-CENT I GRILL IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL UNITED STATES STAMPS. ONLY TWELVE USED AND THREE UNUSED EXAMPLES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED.

Starting with the 2013 Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue, the I Grills were elevated to major catalogue number status. Collectors will now have to acquire these I Grills if they desire completeness.

Ronald A. Burns, the foremost authority on the Bank Note grills, records ten used and three unused examples of the 10c I Grill, plus an additional two used on the same cover.
