1218° c ImageINDIA, 1843 First Afghan War Cover to Saint Helier (Jersey) and Saint Malo. Folded letter datelined "Camp Sikhmah, 2 marches from Lodhgameh, 15th Jany 1843" and addressed to Saint Helier, Jersey, then forwarded to Saint Malo, France, red boxed "Loodiana Paid Jan. 17th" datestamp on reverse, red "India" in oval handstamp, manuscript "via Falmouth" directive, rated "1/-" and a further "9" for forwarding, London and Jersey backstamps, letter with fascinating historical content regarding the embarrassing British defeat and retreat to Kabul during the First Afghan War, Very Fine, written by Eldrid Pottinger (1811-1843), previously named "Hero of Herat", to his mother, where he describes the court inquiry held regarding the British retreat from Kabul, he was named envoy to Afghan court after the murder of Sir William Macnaghten and was one of the hostages handed over to Akbar Khan, released months later in 1843 where he returned to India and ultimately passed away less than year after writing this letter, ex "Sapphire" (Image)
