Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co., (3c) Black on
India, Side by Side Die Essays, One with Blank Labels (11-E19). 67 x 44 mm India paper mounted on 75 x 52 mm card, wonderfully detailed impressions, fresh and bright VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND IMPORTANT CLASSIC UNITED STATES ESSAY. The
tessellated work in the frames of this essay is nearly identical to that of the 3c 1851 as issued (crosses in diamonds here are not seen on the issued 3c), as well as the 12c 1851 and Franklin Carrier Issue. Undoubtedly this rare impression is a
working essay of the final design. One other similar example is known, with the vignette cut out in the right frame and the labels erased in the left frame (Scott 11-E21), which accompanied this example in the Brazer and Piller collections and is now
part of the Gordon Eubanks collection. This is one of the most important production essays of the 1851 Issue and in all of U.S. classic philately. It was featured as the sole item on the catalogue cover for our sale of the Morton Dean Joyce/Clarence
Brazer collection (Siegel Sale 726). Ex Brazer, Joyce and Piller. Scott value ($6,000.00) is out of date. The similar example (11-E21) last sold for $27,000 hammer in Sale 1113 (lot 2095) (Image) Search for comparables at SiegelAuctions.com
