Full margins to barely touching frameline at top, rich color, tied by bold blue grid cancel, matching "PAID" handstamp and "Charleston S.C. 5 Cts Apr. 14" (1852) integral-rate circular datestamp on folded letter to Kristianstad, Sweden, New York circular datestamp struck on back (ocean mail type), matching "20" debit handstamp, Hamburg backstamp, numerous manuscript and red crayon markings showing re-rating in Europe

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE AND COLORFUL USE OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE ON A COVER TO SWEDEN.

The Charleston office presumably accepted the 3c stamp plus cash as prepayment of the 5c inland rate. From New York the cover was sent unpaid.

Covers to Sweden with the 1851 Issue are very rare. This 12c and 3c combination is one of the most attractive of the small population we have encountered.
