Ex Ferrary, Middendorf (Siegel Sale 316) and Honolulu Advertiser. With 1974 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail as two tete beche pairs and two normal singles (Image)

1011   Image1860, 2c Black, Grayish (16). Plate 3-C, Type VIII (Westerberg Position 8), raised "IN" of "INTER", full even margins, crisp and dark impression, cancelled by red "POSTAGE PAID" in oval handstamp, filled thin and sealed tear, Very Fine appearance, a stamp with great visual appeal, to us this stamp is somewhat of a mystery, the paper looks more to us like that normally associated with Scott 18 stamps printed from Plate 5-A, with 2017 P.F. certificate as Scott 16 and so offered on that basis, illustrated in Westerberg plating book, with 2017 P.F. certificate (Image)

1012   ImageHAWAII, 1859-63, 2c Black, "NTER" (16c). Plate 3-F, Type IV (Westerberg Position 4), margins cut close but framelines intact, red "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Nov. 25" circular datestamp leaves "NTER" variety unobscured, few small thin spots, small tear at top right

FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE EXTREMELY RARE "NTER" NUMERAL ISSUE PLATE VARIETY.

As an indication of rarity, the Honolulu Advertiser collection contained only two examples of the "NTER" variety on Grayish paper (both Position 4, Plates 3-E and 3-F), while the Pietsch collection contained one stamp from Plate 3-F (later offered by us in our Twigg-Smith sale, Sale 931, realized $5,500 hammer, the stamp offered here) and an enigmatic example from Position 7 on Plate 3-E. We also offered one in our Sale 1090, which came from a pre-WWII collection and had been off the market for 70+ years.

Ex Crocker (illustrated in his book, p. 45), Atherton, Pietsch and Twigg-Smith. With 2007 P.F. certificate (Image)

FINE APPEARANCE. THE 1863 2-CENT BLACK FIFTH-SETTING NUMERAL ISSUE ON BLUE GRAY PAPER IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL NUMERAL ISSUES ON COVER. A SEARCH OF MAJOR NAME SALES FAILED TO LOCATE EVEN ONE OTHER COVER.

A search of major name sale catalogues, including Tows, Admiral Harris, Crocker, Caspary, Ishikawa, Honolulu Advertiser, Pietsch, Aall, Twigg-Smith and Atherton, failed to produce another example of Scott 18 on cover.

Ex Burrus (sold as No. 16 in Burrus sale) and Golden. With 2011 P.F. certificate. Scott value for No. 18 on cover is $18,000.00 (Image)
