1015   Image1863, 2c Black, Thick Blue Gray Paper (18 var). Plate 5-Bx, Type VII (Westerberg Position 7) with raised "I" of "INTER", full margins to in, cancelled by two neat penstrokes, sealed tear at right, light horizontal crease at top, some age bleach spotting

A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE SO-CALLED "GESVRET" 1863 2-CENT BLACK NUMERAL ON THICK BLUE GRAY PAPER FROM PLATE 5-Bx. ONLY SEVEN COPIES, UNUSED OR USED, HAVE BEEN REPORTED.

According to the Westerberg book, the existence of this Numeral printing first came to light in 1902. Three copies were discovered by Mr. E. Gesvret, who assigned it to a new plate. Both Gesvret and Westerberg agreed that this stamp has more in common typographically with Scott No. 17, the Dark Blue Numeral, than it does either of the Black Numerals -- Scott Nos. 18 or 20.

1023   Image1864, 2c Black (20 var). Plate 5-Cx, Type VII (Westerberg Position 7), raised "I" of "INTER", large even margins, 9-bar square grid cancel, slight overall toning

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A VERY RARE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1864 2-CENT FIFTH-SETTING NUMERAL FROM PLATE 5-Cx, WITH THE ADDED APPEAL OF THE RAISED "I" PLATE VARIETY.

After Westerberg published his Plating the Hawaiian Numerals in 1968, he acknowledged the existence of Plate 5-Cx. As such, it does not appear in his plating diagrams. According to the Pietsch sale catalogue (Shreve), Westerberg described this stamp as "a stamp from hitherto unknown Plate 5-Cx". It has been reported that five or fewer examples are known and this is only the third example we have offered since keeping computerized records.

Ex D'Assis, Pietsch and Twigg-Smith. Scott Retail $1,500.00 as normal from Plate 5-C (Image)

1024 og Image1865, 5c Bluish Black, Grayish White, "Hawaiian Postage" (21b). Plate 9-A, Type V (Westerberg Position 5), unused (no gum), large even margins, a tiny negligible thin speck shows in fluid

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE BLUISH-BLACK 5-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" NUMERAL, SCOTT 21b.

This stamp is printed on thin yellowish white wove paper, which is similar in color and texture to Scott 20 but slightly thinner. The color of the printed design is superficially black; however, when held to intense light the ink shows a hybrid mixture of blue and black, which suggests that the printer was experimenting with ink and paper colors when this stamp was printed. Whether it is a proof (no Numeral proofs are known) or an issued stamp (only one other example is known, used and defective), we cannot say.
