VERY FINE. A RARE USE FROM HIOGO, JAPAN, TO GERMANY SENT VIA THE U.S. POST OFFICE IN YOKOHAMA, JAPAN.

The 20c postage pays 10c rate from Japan to the U.S. and 10c rate from the U.S. to Germany. Carried on the PMSS Alaska, which departed Yokohama Aug. 8 and arrived in San Francisco Sep. 1. From New York it was sent on the Guion line's Wyoming, which departed Sep. 11 and arrived Queenstown on Sep. 23. (Image)

2327 c Image10c Brown (161). Two, gorgeous centering, cancelled by cork and tied by San Francisco Cal. Aug. 25” circular datestamp on cover originating in Ikuno, Japan, and sent to Lyon, France, red New York Sep. 2” circular datestamp, boxed PD” handstamp, French transit and receiving backstamps, Very Fine and rare use, sent from Dr. Augustine Hénon in Ikuno to his wife (docketing indicates July 10, 1874 origin date), mailed in an outer envelope to the U.S. post office in Yokohama, this inner cover was removed and the outer discarded, this cover placed in the mailbag for the PMSS Japan, which departed Yokohama Aug. 3, 1874, and arrived in San Francisco on Aug. 24, then sent to New York, where it was carried on the NGL steamer Minister Roon, which departed New York Sep. 2 and arrived at Havre on Sep. 13 -- when this was mailed from Japan the rate to France was 10c but it was lowered to 9c during transit, so this was technically overpaid by 1c -- the Henon correspondence is discussed in Matsumoto’s A History of the French Post Office of Yokohama (pp. 136-139), with 2004 P.F. certificate (Image)
