VERY FINE. A SPECTACULAR HAWAII-UNITED STATES MIXED FRANKING -- LISTED IN THE GREGORY CENSUS AS THE ONLY USED MULTIPLE OF THE 5-CENT "INTERISLAND" ISSUE ON COVER.
This was carried on the American bark Cambridge to San Francisco, departing Honolulu May 19, 1866 and arriving June 10. From San Francisco the cover was carried east in the overland mail. The sender affixed the Hawaii pair in an attempt to prepay the 5c Hawaiian and 5c U.S. postage. The 5c 1861 Issue stamp was added either in Honolulu or San Francisco. Of the 11 covers with Hawaii No. 22 recorded in the Gregory census, this is the only one with a pair. We record no used pairs off cover either.
Illustrated in Gregory Hawaii Foreign Mail to 1870, Volume II on p. 201. Ex Tows, Baker, Risvold and Walske (Image)
