1286 ogbl ImageHAWAII, 1893, 12c Black, Category I Double Red Ovpt. (62d). Block of four with wide left sheet selvage, a total of six ovpts. present on the block with the bottom pair strong second ovpt. split horizontally, original gum, deep shade, centered to bottom

FINE. A RARE BLOCK OF THE 12-CENT 1893 PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT ISSUE WITH TWO SHOWING DOUBLE RED OVERPRINTS.

Only two sheets were doubly overprinted. This block with two examples, plus two stamps showing a small portion of a second overprint, is extremely rare.

With 1969 P.F. certificate (as old No. 62a). Scott Retail as two Category I errors (Image)

One of each, the first with moderate diagonal second ovpt. showing dramatic vertical and horizontal split causing the ovpt. to appear in the top right and bottom left corners, small part original gum, small thin spot, appears Fine, the other stamp with weaker second ovpt. that falls into the Category III group but is unlisted in Scott this way, original gum, light toning mostly on the perfs, Very Fine appearance, with 2003 P.F. certificate, Scott Retail as two of No. 62e (Image)

Tied by four-ring target cancel on registered cover to Dunedin, New Zealand, red "Honolulu, Hawaii Aug. 11, 1893" double-circle datestamp and matching "R", manuscript "per S.S. Miowera", receiving backstamp, printed company corner card on backflap for agent of Lloyd's, some edge wear including tear at top from opening, some toning, otherwise Very Fine and rare use paying 10c rate plus 15c registered return fee to New Zealand, ex Aall, the Miowera was wrecked on rocks near Honolulu on October 2, 1893, shortly after this cover was carried (Image)
