1101 ng ImageHAWAII, 1859-63, 2c Black, "2" at Top (16a). Plate 3-C, Type IX (Westerberg Position 9), unused (no gum), large to huge margins including bottom left corner sheet margins, few thin spots, light diagonal crease

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A SPECTACULAR HUGE-MARGINED UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE DISTINCTIVE RAISED "2" VARIETY. CERTAINLY ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.

The "2" at Top is one of the most prominent typographic varieties on the Numeral plates. It is found exclusively among stamps printed on grayish paper (Scott 16). The numeral was raised on only one position -- Type IX (Position 9) -- on Plate 3-C (the first printing at the Government Printing Office), Plate 3-D and Plate 3-E. Unused examples are rare, and this spectacular sheet-margin example is one of the finest, despite the small flaws.

The Scott Catalogue prices unused and used the same despite the greater relative availability of used copies. (Image)

1102 ng ImageHAWAII, 1859-63, 2c Black, "2" at Top (16a). Plate 3-D, Type IX (Westerberg Position 9), large margins to full, the "2" shifted dramatically to top, accompanying certificate notes thins and creases which we have great difficulty detecting, there is some manuscript offset on back so this was likely used but not cancelled (not mentioned on accompanying certificate)

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 1859-63 2-CENT HAWAIIAN NUMERAL WITH THE "2" AT TOP.

The "2" at Top is one of the most prominent typographic varieties on the Numeral plates. It is found exclusively among stamps printed on grayish paper (Scott 16). 1104   ImageHAWAII, 1859-63, 2c Black, "NTER" (16c). Plate 3-F, Type VII (Westerberg Position 7), large margins to ample, neat strike of red "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Jan. 1" circular datestamp leaves the variety clearly visible, few thin spots, tear at left, crease and repair

VERY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE EXTREMELY RARE "NTER" NUMERAL ISSUE PLATE VARIETY.

As an indication of rarity, the Honolulu Advertiser collection contained only two examples of the "NTER" variety on Grayish paper (both Position 4, Plates 3-E and 3-F), while the Pietsch collection contained one stamp from Plate 3-F (later offered by us in our Twigg-Smith sale, Sale 931, realized $5,500 hammer) and an enigmatic example from Position 7 on Plate 3-E. We also offered one in our Sale 1090, which came from a pre-WWII collection and had been off the market for 70+ years.
