The Dr. Carmen A. Puliafito Collection of Independent Mails continued...

Pomeroys Letter Express, cont. continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
289 c ImagePomeroy's Letter Express, 5c Blue on Thin Bond (117L3). Horizontal pair, large to huge margins, uncancelled but effectively tied at bottom right corner by ink toning from address, used to forward a letter first sent by U.S. mail, blue "Mount Vernon O. Aug. 23" circular datestamp and manuscript "37-1/2" double rate to Rochester N.Y., confirmed by sender's notation "Double", forwarded to New York City with pair of Pomeroy's 5c Blue stamps paying double rate, the key to validating the use of Pomeroy's Letter Express is the red "Boyd's City Express Post, Aug. 31 9 O'C" framed datestamp, which could not be on this cover unless it was a conjunctive use with an Independent Mail company to carry it from Rochester to New York City, long tear across the front affects Boyd's marking, it is sealed with document tape but the certificate incorrectly states "scotch tape", despite condition issues this is a unique cover and very exhibit-worthy, this is the only recorded example of Pomeroy's Letter Express used with U.S. government mail to reach the addressee, with 2001 P.F. certificate (Image)

290 c ImagePOMIROY'S MAIL/PAID. Red straightline with spelling error "I" for "E", appears to be joined with "PAID." in a unified handstamp, manuscript "6c" rate on Aug. 5, 1844 folded letter from Auburn to Albany N.Y., letter mentions using Pomeroy to save two-thirds of expense in sending letters, Very Fine, extremely rare, this is illustrated as the only recorded example in the David Snow census in Independent Mails book, but there might be one other example (Siegel Sale 1101, lot 618), ex Hahn (Image)

291 c ImagePOMEROY'S MAIL. Red straightline handstamp and "P A I D ." handstamp on bluish gray folded letter datelined "Albany August 5, 1844" and addressed to Boston street address, handed to Hale & Company for transport to Boston, red "Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Albany" and "Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Boston" oval datestamps struck over the Pomeroy "Paid" marking, which suggests Hale collected something for their effort, Extremely Fine, an unusual cover that proves these two types of Pomeroy markings were applied at the Albany office (Image)
