A PHILATELICALLY IMPORTANT DOCUMENT SIGNED BY QUEEN VICTORIA MAKING LE MARCHANT THE POSTMASTER OF NOVA SCOTIA.
Postal regulations in Nova Scotia fell under the jurisdiction of the Crown, via the Lieutenant Governor, for Final Approval and Establishment.
The document is quite fresh and the famous signature of Victoria especially clear. The paper bears the watermark "J. Whatman/Turkey Mill 1847", the Royal Papermaker for Queen Victoria's personal correspondence. Also of note is the £200 embossed revenue stamp, a particularly large amount for that time, the equivalent of about £100,000 today.
Sir John Gaspard Le Marchant joined the British Army at in 1820 at age 17, eventually reaching the rank of Colonel. He was the Governor of Newfoundland from 1847-1852, just before being appointed Lt. Governor of Nova Scotia. He later became Governor of Malta.
A unique document and an indispensable item for someone wishing to display the entire philatelic history of Nova Scotia. (Image)
