EXTREMELY FINE STAMP. A BEAUTIFUL CORNER CARD COVER WITH THE PETERSBURG 5-CENT PROVISIONAL.
Ex McCarren. With 1999 P.F. certificate. (Image)
VERY FINE. A CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE PETERSBURG POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL TIED BY THE SCARCE DROPPED 5 CTS” INTEGRAL-RATE DATESTAMP.
The Petersburg integral-rate datestamp on this cover is the Dropped 5 cts” variety, in which the value extends below the rim of the circular datestamp.
Ex Caspary and Dr. Green. With 2000 P.F. certificate. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE FINEST RECORDED OFF-COVER USED EXAMPLE OF THE PLEASANT SHADE POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL.
The Pleasant Shade provisional is far rarer in used condition than unused. There are three singles known on covers (one in the British Library collection) and the unique pair on cover. We record only two examples used off cover: a stamp tied on piece, ex Caspary and Weatherly, and this sound stamp.
Ex Nassau Stamp Company Stock, Weill Brothers’ Stock and Dr. Graves (Argentum”). With 1999 P.F. certificate. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE RHEATOWN POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL CANCELLED BY THE TOWN MARKING.
Our records of the Rheatown provisional list one unused single, one unused pair, five singles on covers, one pen-cancelled single on a dated piece, and three used singles. Only this stamp and one on cover are cancelled by the town datestamp. All of the other used stamps are cancelled by pen. This is by far the finest stamp off cover, none of which is sound.
Ex Deats and Hall (acquired from Warren H. Colson in 1934). With 2000 P.F. certificate. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IMMACULATE COVER IS BELIEVED TO BE THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA, POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL EXTANT.
The addressee, Julius A. Lineback of Haw River and Winston-Salem, N.C., was a member of the marching band attached to the 26th North Carolina Regiment during the Civil War. His papers are located at the University of North Carolina Library (www.lib.unc.edu ).
Illustrated in the Crown book (page 318). This strike is also illustrated in the Scott Catalogue. Signed Colson and Weill. Ex Emerson, Caspary and Lilly. With 2006 P.F. certificate. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS SUPERB STAMP IS THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE RARE SPARTANBURG 5-CENT POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON OR OFF COVER.
We know of only one other cut-square example of the 5c 78X1 provisional, a stained and defective copy on cover. There is also a cut-square copy of 78X3 on cover, ex Caspary.
The footnote to the Scott Catalogue listing states: Most examples of Nos. 78X1- 78X3 are cut round. Cut square examples in sound condition are worth much more.” The only cut-square Spartanburg provisionals in sound condition are this stamp (78X1) and the 78X3 stamp on cover, ex Caspary.
Illustrated in Crown book (page 325). Ex Caspary. With 1956 and 2004 P.F. certificates. Unpriced off cover in Scott. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE UNIONTOWN POSTMASTER’S 5-CENT PROVISIONAL ON GRAY BLUE PAPER.
Ex Hind and Hall. With 2002 P.F. certificate. (Image)
