UNITED STATES POSSESSIONS Cuba
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
6041 E   image1898 cover to Norway, franked with vertical strip of 5x2c carmine, tied by "United States Post Office Military Station No.1, CUBA" handstamps, showing on back New York July 9, 1898 transit and "Kristiania" (23.7.98) arrival markings, trivial cover wrinkling, otherwise fine. The first military station opened at Daiquiri, Cuba on 23 June, 1898. The first postmark was undated, so "Earliest Use" cannot be documented. Based on an average of about 2 1/2 weeks delivery time from Cuba to U.S., this cover, which transited NY on 9 July, would possibly have been included in the first mail dispatch from Daiquiri. It is furthermore a cover to a foreign destination, possibly the only one sent during that time (Image)
