6032 E   image1921 cover to the United States, franked with two each 2c carmine and 5c dark blue, paying 14c, tied by "Krasno-pavlovka 27..17" cds, with British "Opened by Censor" label and bearing "A.E.F. Siberia Censored / Sig." violet handstamp, fine. Theo Van Dam (Postal History of the A.E.F.) notes that "This censor marking is not only the scarcest of all Siberian Censor markings, it is also the one most shrouded in mystery. This cover, dated February 27, 1917, well before U.S. troops arrived in Russia, and another dated January 19, 1921, are both civil mail with postage affixed. Apparently there was a detention center where mail was held and later forwarded to its destination, long after being postmarked"). 6034 E   imageNaval and Maritime Mail. 1920-22 two covers addressed to "U.S. Naval Radio Station Vladivostok, Siberia", one from Manila, handstamped and dated "American Consulate Vladivostok May 18 1920", the other "U.S.S. Isabel" (Ichang, China), sent Sep 12, 1922, some cover wear, otherwise fine. These are the only two (!) recorded covers addressed to the Naval Radio Station in Vladivostok harbor (U. S. Naval Radio Station, Russian Island was located on Russian Island, Siberia (Vladivostok). The station established communication with Peking, Cavite, Guam and with ships within range of the station and as far as Paul and Cordova, Alaska. Cable was laid from the station to Vladivostok, a distance of about fifteen miles, for both telephone and telegraph service at the headquarters of the American Expeditionary Forces and at the Russian Island Red Cross Hospital. As Government traffic increased, the station remained in U.S. control, furnishing communication to and from the American Expeditionary Forces in Siberia and with vessels of the Fleet in Chinese and Japanese waters) (Image)
